Watch the water quality. Not every lake or river is safe for swimming!
- Avoid murky, stagnant water
- Watch for no-swimming warning signs
- Algae can be DANGEROUS (especially blue-green algae)
Parasites and bacteria. Water can hide dangers you can't see!
- Leptospirosis (spread through contaminated water)
- Worms and giardia
- Always rinse and dry your pet after swimming
Watch the ears and eyes
Pay attention to the following:
- Water in the ears = risk of infection
- Wipe and dry the ears after swimming
- If the eye turns red, see a vet
Overexposure to sun and overheating
- Don't let your dog run on hot sand or asphalt
- Take breaks in the shade
- Bring fresh water
- Never leave your dog in the car
Keep safety in mind
- Always keep an eye on your dog
- Dogs that can't swim may panic
- Use a life vest for unsure swimmers
- Avoid strong currents and fast rivers
