When is licking paws normal behavior?
- A quick clean-up after a walk
- Occasional licking while resting
- Moderate, with no change in behavior
When is it a sign of a problem?
If you notice:
- Excessive, persistent licking
- Redness, swelling, a wound, or an unpleasant smell
- The dog becomes anxious or withdrawn
Possible causes of paw licking
- Allergies (food, pollen, chemicals)
- Pain (a wound, a foreign object, arthritis)
- Boredom or stress
- Parasites or fungal infections
What can you do?
- Check the paws after every walk
- Wipe and dry them thoroughly
- If it keeps happening – a vet visit is a must!
